Dev Diwali, or Dev Deepawali, means “The Diwali of the Gods.” Celebrated on the full moon of Kartik month, it marks the divine festival of lights. In 2025, it falls on November 5 (Wednesday).

On this day, Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. To celebrate, the gods descended to Earth and lit countless lamps along the Ganga, illuminating the world with divine light.

Devotees take a holy dip in the Ganges and perform Deepdaan (Deep offering) to receive blessings from the gods. It is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and Goddess Lakshmi’s grace.

Scriptures say that bathing in the Ganga and offering lamps on Kartik Purnima removes sins and grants punya (divine virtue).

If you can’t visit the Ganga, light five lamps at home — at the entrance, kitchen, near Tulsi, in a Shiva temple, and in the northeast corner. These bring harmony, positivity, and wealth.

Light the first lamp at your main door to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and drive away poverty.

The second Deep should be lit near the water area in your kitchen. It symbolizes nourishment, health, and abundance.

Lighting a lamp near the Tulsi plant brings harmony and marital bliss. It is believed to invoke divine protection and peace.

Offer the fourth Deep in a Lord Shiva temple. This act pleases Shiva and removes obstacles and misfortunes.

The fifth Deep should be placed in the northeast direction (Ishan Kon) of your home. This helps ward off negative energies and invite positivity.

During the Pradosh Kaal, it is considered auspicious to light 5, 7, 11, 21, 51, or even 101 Diyas. Devotees also perform Shiva Puja and sing the evening Aarti.

If possible, take a dip in a holy river early in the morning (Brahma Muhurat). If not, bathe at home using Ganga Jal (holy water) mixed with your bath water. This purifies the soul and brings blessings.
