Kharna, also called Lohanda, is the second day of Chhath Puja. On this day, devotees observe a strict nirjala fast (without food or water) from sunrise until sunset — symbolizing purification and discipline.

What is Kharna? 

At sunset, devotees prepare Kheer (rice pudding made with jaggery), Roti, and Banana, offering it to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya before breaking their fast. This prasad is later shared with family and neighbors.

Ritual Process 

It marks the spiritual cleansing before the main offerings (Arghya) to the Sun God. The sweetness of gur (jaggery) in kheer symbolizes prosperity and inner peace. Sharing the prasad builds community bonding and gratitude.

Significance of Kharna 

Gur ki Kheer – made of rice, milk, and jaggery, Roti or Poori – cooked in ghee, Bananas & fruits – added to prasad thali, Pure water – offered to Surya Dev before eating

Traditional Prasad Detail

Kharna represents detoxifying both body and mind. It’s believed that observing the fast brings forgiveness for past sins and prepares devotees to connect deeply with divine energy on Day 3.

Spiritual Meaning 

People clean ghats, decorate them with diyas and flowers. The ritual promotes environmental respect — keeping rivers and ponds clean for Surya worship.
