IMD Alert: Cyclone Montha Set to Hit India’s East Coast on October 28

IMD Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for several parts of India’s eastern coast as Cyclone Montha brews over the Bay of Bengal. The system, which is currently a depression, is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28, bringing extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and parts of West Bengal.

Cyclone Landfall and Path Prediction

According to the IMD, Cyclone Montha is likely to make landfall near Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, on the evening or night of October 28. The storm is expected to carry wind speeds ranging from 60–80 km/h, accompanied by intense downpours and rough sea conditions.

Weather Alert for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha

  • Andhra Pradesh: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected from October 27–28, especially in Yanam and Rayalaseema regions.

  • Odisha: Districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri are likely to experience heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29.

  • A yellow warning has been issued for the entire state on October 26.

Impact on Tamil Nadu and Chennai

In Tamil Nadu, moderate rain with thunder and lightning has been forecasted for Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam.
By October 25–26, the rainfall activity will intensify in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry, extending to Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur.
Chennai may experience heavy downpours on October 27, with rains easing by October 28.

Current Status of Cyclone Montha

As of 11:30 PM on October 25, the depression was located around 550 km west of Port Blair, 850 km east-southeast of Chennai, and 890 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and Kakinada.
The system is moving northwestward at a speed of 8 kmph and is expected to intensify into a deep depression by October 26 and a cyclonic storm by October 27 morning.

IMD’s Safety Advisory

Authorities have urged coastal residents to stay alert, avoid sea activities, and follow official advisories. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea from October 26–29 due to rough weather conditions.
