Somnath Jyotirlinga

The sacred journey begins with the first of the 12 Jyotirlingas—the divine abode of Lord Shiva at Somnath.

Where Is It Located?

Somnath Temple stands in Prabhas Patan, Gir Somnath district, Gujarat, on the beautiful coast of the Arabian Sea.

Why Is It Called Somnath?

"Soma" means Moon God and "Nath" means Lord. Lord Shiva earned this name after blessing the Moon God at this sacred site.

The Sacred Legend

Cursed by King Daksha, the Moon God lost his brilliance. He performed intense penance here, and Lord Shiva restored his divine radiance.

Why it is sacred?

Somnath is believed to be the first Jyotirlinga where Lord Shiva manifested as an eternal pillar of divine light.

A Symbol of Resilience

The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times, standing today as a timeless symbol of unwavering faith and India's spiritual heritage.

The Present Temple

The magnificent temple seen today was rebuilt after India's independence, inspired by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
