Significance of Shankh Puja in Margashirsha Month

Connection with Lord Krishna

The month of Margashirsha is especially dear to Lord Krishna. According to the scriptures, worshipping any conch during this period is equivalent to worshipping Lord Krishna’s divine Panchajanya Shankh. It is said that those who offer prayers to the conch with devotion during this month have their desires fulfilled and receive divine grace.

One of the Fourteen Gems from Samudra Manthan

As mentioned in the Vishnu Purana, the Shankh is among the 14 precious gems that emerged during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). The conch is believed to hold the essence of sacred pilgrimage sites within it, and the water kept inside a Shankh is considered as holy as Ganga Jal. Offering this water to Lord Vishnu brings purity, peace, and blessings.

Symbol of Goddess Lakshmi

The Shankh is also regarded as the brother of Goddess Lakshmi, since both originated from the ocean. Among all types, the Dakshinavarti Shankh (right-handed conch) is considered to represent Goddess Lakshmi herself.
Performing Shankh Puja during the month of Margashirsha brings wealth, prosperity, and happiness to the household by pleasing the Goddess of fortune.

Moksha for Ancestors

It is believed that performing abhishek (ritual bathing) of Lord Vishnu using a conch filled with holy water during this month grants peace and salvation (moksha) to one’s ancestors. It is also said to bless the family with growth and divine protection.

Source of Positive Energy

The sound of the Shankh is considered highly auspicious. Blowing it purifies the atmosphere, removes negative energies, and fills the home with divine vibrations and positivity.

The Pearl Shankh for Prosperity

Keeping a Moti Shankh (pearl conch) in your locker or wealth area is believed to attract prosperity. Place unbroken rice inside the conch, wrap it in a white cloth, and store it in the place where you keep your valuables — it is said to bring continuous financial growth.

Donating a Shankh

Offering a Shankh to a Vishnu temple during the Margashirsha month is considered very auspicious. This act of devotion helps remove financial troubles and brings peace and progress in life.

Abhishek with Ganga Jal and Saffron

To receive the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, mix Ganga Jal (holy water) and saffron in a Dakshinavarti Shankh, and perform abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Goddess. This ritual is believed to bring lasting happiness, purity, and abundance in life.

Powerful Mantra for Shankh Puja

During Shankh Puja, devotees should chant the following mantra to invoke divine blessings:

“Om Shri Shankhaya Namah”

or

“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”

Chanting these mantras with devotion purifies the heart, brings spiritual elevation, and strengthens the connection with Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

The Margashirsha month is a period of deep spiritual energy, faith, and divine connection. Worshipping the Shankh during this sacred time not only pleases Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi but also enhances positivity, wealth, and purity in one’s life.
As the sound of the conch resonates, it carries away negativity and fills the home with divine peace — marking the true essence of Margashirsha Bhakti.
