Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha 2025: Karwa Chauth is one of the most significant festivals for married Hindu women. On this day, women observe a nirjala vrat (fast without food and water) and pray for the long life, health, and prosperity of their husbands. Along with fasting, listening to the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha holds special importance. It is believed that the vrat is considered incomplete if the Katha is not heard.
This year, the auspicious time for listening to the Karwa Chauth Katha is between 5:57 PM to 7:11 PM. Here’s the full story of this sacred vrat for your reference.
Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha (Story)
According to the Katha, a wealthy merchant (Seth) had seven sons and one daughter, all of whom were married. On Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Kartik month, the merchant’s daughter, along with her seven sisters-in-law, observed the Karwa Chauth vrat.
In the evening, when the merchant’s sons sat down to eat, they invited their sister to join them. But the sister replied that she could not eat yet because the moon had not appeared. She said she would only break her fast after offering arghya to the moon.
The sons, deeply loving their sister, didn’t want to see her suffer from hunger. They went outside the city and lit a fire on a tree to simulate moonlight. Returning home, they told her, “Look, the moon has risen, now you can offer arghya and eat.”
The sisters-in-law, however, told her that the moon had not actually appeared and that her brothers were trying to trick her. Despite their warning, the merchant’s daughter offered arghya to the firelight and broke her fast.
As a result, her husband fell ill due to the displeasure of Lord Ganesha, and their wealth was spent on treating him.
When the daughter realized her mistake, she repented sincerely and resumed the Chaturthi vrat with proper devotion. She respected all those present during the rituals and received their blessings. Pleased by her sincere devotion, Lord Ganesha healed her husband, blessed them with wealth, prosperity, and a disease-free life.
It is said that anyone who observes the Chaturthi vrat without deceit, ego, greed, or malice and with true devotion, is blessed with a happy and prosperous life.
